FULL BIOGRAPHY
Alberto Carbonilla has 30 years of experience in training, organization development, intercultural communication, and educational management. He has worked and lived in The Philippines, Japan, and the United States. He has a Master’s Degree in Communication from La Salle University in Philadelphia, with an emphasis on organizational and intercultural communication.
Alberto is currently a faculty member at the School of Business of The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), teaching Cross-cultural Management, Human Resources Management, and Management Principles and Application. He holds the 2017 Virginia Dietrich Excellence in Teaching award given by the School of Business; he’s also been awarded Advisor of the Year two years in a row (2018, 2019) by the Office of Student Involvement.
He is also a training consultant on intercultural competence and business communication skills for professionals/executives of Fortune 500 companies bound for overseas assignments, and other professionals in healthcare, legal, government, and educational settings. He has worked for Training Management Corporation and Berlitz Cultural Consulting, and has designed and delivered training programs and coaching sessions for global managers, varied personnel, and relocating executives of Procter and Gamble, Merrill Lynch, Glaxo Smith Kline, (RELX) Reed Elsevier, the US Navy, Princeton University, to name a few.
In Japan, he worked as business communication trainer and Program Developer for the Language Institute of Japan. He designed curriculum, trained trainers, and provided intensive cross-cultural and language training to Japanese corporate employees bound for the U.S.
Alberto designed and launched “Intercultural Communication Skills for Healthcare Professionals,” a series of innovative and practical workshops that was sought after by healthcare agencies and hospitals in Southern California. It was also featured in HomeCare Magazine, the nationwide trade magazine for the healthcare equipment industry
He lived for 8 years in the Philippine Refugee Processing Center as a cross-cultural trainer under the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, preparing Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian migrant refugees for different work styles, educational systems, and health care practices, and value orientations in the U.S.
Alberto managed the Learning, Development, and Implementation unit of a state authority in NJ as Training and Development Manager. He designed and implemented company-wide training initiatives on cultural competence, communication, team building and development, DISC behavioral styles, performance evaluation processes, management and leadership skills, training of trainers, and strategic organizational goals.
Before TCNJ, Alberto has worked as the Senior Manager for Organizational Effectiveness at the Superintendent’s Office of Newark Public Schools, under the Office of Strategic Partnerships.
He currently resides in New Jersey.
